Here's a great resource that's easy to miss. This regional bus service has local routes and a bargain priced service service (with WiFi!) to San Jose Check out MST.
Don't be afraid of the train+bus connection! Amtrak has a variety of routes that bring you to Salinas and then it's a short hop by bus to Monterey. Check out Amtrak.
It's just four minutes from the airport to the Fairgrounds. And there are lots of connecting flights from major airports in the area (but be sure to book your flight early...they fill up fast).
